A body of mass m is suspended by two strings making angles `alpha and beta` with the horizontal. Find the tensions in the strings.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the body is in equilibrium, horizontal components of `T_(1)` and `T_(2)` balance.
`:. T_(1) cos alpha =T_(2)cos beta` or `T_(2)=(T_(1)cos alpha)/(cos beta)`....(i)
Again, vertical components of `T_(1)` and `T_(2)` balance the weight of the body.
`:. T_(1) sin alpha + T_(2) sin beta = mg`
using (i), `T_(1)sin alpha+(T_(1) cos alpha)/(cos beta)sin beta =mg`
`T_(1)=(mg cos beta)/(sin alpha cos beta +cos alpha sin beta)=(mg cos beta)/(sin (alpha+beta))`
From (i),
`T_(2)=(mg cos beta)/(sin(alpha+beta)).(cos alpha)/(cos beta)=(mg cos alpha)/(sin(alpha+beta))`.
