In an elastic collision of two billiard ...

In an elastic collision of two billiard balls, which of the following quantities remain conserved during the short time of collision of the balls (i.e., when they are in contact).
(a) Kinetic energy . (b) Total linear momentum ?
Give reason for your answer in each case.

In such a collision, total linear momentum is always conserved. However, when the balls are in contact, there may occur some deformation. So part of K.E. may be converted into elastic potential energy. Therefore, K.E. may not be conserved.

Anwer carefully, with reasons: a) In an elastic collision of two billiard balls, is the total kinetic energy conserved during the short time of collision of the balls (i.e. when they are in contact)? Is the total linear momentum conserved during the short time of an elastic collision of two balls? c) What are the answers to a) and b) for an inelastic collision? d) If the potenital energy of two billiard balls depends only on the separation distance between their centers, is the collision elastic or inelastic? (note we are talking here of potential energy corresponding to the force during collision, not gravitational potential energy).

Assertion : In an elastic collision of two billiard balls, the total knetic energy is conserved during the short time of oscillation of the balls ( i.e. when they are in contact ) . Reason : Energy spent against friction does not follow the law of conservation of energy .

Assertion: In an elasticcollision of two billard balls, the total KE is conservation during the short times of collision of the balls (i.e., when they are in constant). Reason: Energy spend against friction does not follow the law of conservation of energy.

During elastic collision of two balls, is kinetic energy conserved during the short interval of contact of balls ?

Assertion: Collisionn between two billiard's ball are inelastic Reason: Momentum remains conserve during the collision.
