Figure shows a smooth curved track terminating in a smooth horizontal part. A spring of spring constant 400 N/m is attached at one end of a wedge fixed rigidly with the horizontal part. A 40 g mas is released from rest at a height of 4.9 m n the curved track. Find the maximum compression of the spring.

A

`9.8m`

B

`9.8 cm`

C

`.98m`

D

`.009 km`

The correct Answer is:
B

Here, `m=40g=0.04kg,h=5m,`
`k=400Nm^(-1)`
According to law of conservation of total energy Loss in PE of mass
`=` gain in PE of compressed spring
`mgh=(1)/(2)kx^(2)`
or `x=sqrt((2mgh)/(k))=sqrt((2xx0.04xx10xx5)/(400))`
`=(1)/(10)m=10cm=9.8cm`
