Why spin angular velocity of a star is greatly enhanced when it collapses under gravitational pull and becomes a neutron star ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

On collapsing under gravitational pull, size of star decreases. Therefore, its moment of inertia decreases. As angular momentum `(L = I omega)` is conserved, and `I` decreases, therefore, spin angular velocity `omega` increases.

The angular velocity of earth around the sun increases when it comes closer to the sun. Why ?

A massive star is spinning about its diameter with an angular speed omega_(0) = (pi)/(1000) rad/day. After its fuel is exhausted, the star collapses under its own gravity to form a neutron star. Assume that the volume of the star decreases to 10^(-12) times the original volume and its shape remains spherical. Assuming that density of the star is uniform, find the angular speed of the neutron star.

A star of mass twice the solar mass and radius 10^(6) km rotates about its axis with an angular speed of 10^(6) "rad s"^(-1) . What is the angular speed of the star when it collapses (due to inward gravitational force) to a radius of 10^(4) km ? Solar mass 1.99 xx 10^(30) kg.

A star of mass equal to two solar masses and radius 10^(6) km rotates about its axis with an angular speed of 10^(-6)rad s^(-1) . What is the angular speed of the star, when it collapses (due to inward gravitational forces) to a radius of 10^(4) km ?

The angular velocity of a particle is given by omega=1.5t-3t^(@)+2 , Find the time when its angular acceleration becomes zero.

Calculate angular velocity of the earth so that acceleration due to gravity at 60^(@) latitude becomes zero (radius of the earth = 6400 km, gravitational acceleration at poles = 10 m//s^(2) , cos60^(@) = 0.5 )

A large non rotating star of mass M and radius R begins to collapse under its own gravity and ultimately becomes very small (nearly a point mass). Assume that the density remains uniform inside the sphere in any stage. Plot the variation of gravitational field intensity (well, you can call it cceleration due to gravity) at a distance (R)/(2) from the centre vs the radius (r) of the star.

The angular velocity of a particle increases from O to omega as it completest x rotations .Then number of rotation completes by it when its angular velocity becomes 2 omega .
