A heat engine receives `50 kcal` of heat from the source per cycle, and operates with an efficiency of `20%`. The heat rejected by engine to the sink per cycle is

A

`40 kcal`

B

`25 kcal`

C

`30 kcal`

D

`50 kcal`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Given `Q_1 = 50 kcal and eta = 20%`
Using `eta = W/(Q_1)`, we have `W = etaxxQ_(1)`
i.e., work obtained per cycle `W = 20% xx 50 kcal`
`=10kcal = 42 kJ`
Since `Q_(1) = Q_(2)+W` so `Q_(2) = Q-W`
i.e., heat rejected to the sink per cycle `Q_(2)`
`=50kcal-10kcal=40kcal`.

Heat engine rejects some heat to the sink. This heat

Two Carnot engines are operated in succession. The first engine receives heat from a source at T=800K and rejects to sink at T_(2)K . The second engine receives heat rejected by the first engine and rejects to another sink at T_(3)= 300K . If work outputs of the two engines are equal, then find the value of T_(2) .

What is a heat engine? Explain the efficiency of a heat engine.

Carnot engine working as a refrigerator between 260K and 300K receives 500cal of heat from the freezing chamber. Calculate the heat rejected by it to the higher temperature reservior and also the work done per cycle to operate the refrigerator.

If the temperature of a source increases, then the efficiency of a heat engine

In a heat engine, the temperature of the source and sink are 500 K and 375 K. If the engine consumes 25xx10^5J per cycle, find(a) the efficiency of the engine, (b) work done per cycle, and (c) heat rejected to the sink per cycle.

Two Carnot engines A and B are operated in series. The engine A receives heat from the source at temperature T_1 and rejects the heat to the sink at temperature T. The second engine B receives the heat at temperature T and rejects to its sink at temperature T_(2) . For what value of T the efficiencies of the two engines are equal?
