The average velocity of gas molecules is...

The average velocity of gas molecules is `400 m s^(-1)`. Calculate their `rms` velocity at the same temperature.

Text Solution

We know `u_(AV) = sqrt(((8RT)/(piM)))`
`u_(rms) =sqrt(((3RT)/(M)))`
By eqs (1) and (2)
`u_(rms) =sqrt(((3pi)/(8))) x u_(AV)`
`( :' u_(AV) = 400//sec)`
or `= sqrt((3 xx 3.14)/(8)) xx 400 = 434 m//sec` .
