A satellite which is geostationary in a ...

A satellite which is geostationary in a particular orbit is taken to another orbit. Its distance from the centre of earth in new orbit is 2 times that of the earlier orbit. The time period in the second orbit is

A

4.8 hours

B

`48sqrt(2)` hours

C

24 hours

D

`24sqrt(2)`hours

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

As per formula ` T=(2pi)/(R ) sqrt(((R+h)^(3))/(g))`
Time period of 1st geostationary satellite `=R+h`
` therefore (24)/(T) = sqrt((R+h)^(3))/({2(R+h)}^(3))=sqrt((1)/(8))`
`implies T=24 sqrt(8)=48 sqrt(2)`hours
