Various metals such as copper, iron, silver, etc. are used in day-to-day life. These metals get corroded after long time and lose their shine. There are various ways to glitter these metal articles.
i. Rubbing the vessels with sand paper or toothpaste: Sand paper and toothpaste contain fine abrasive particles. We can remove the outer damaged surface from metal articles by rubbing it with sand paper or toothpaste. Once the outer corroded layer is removed, the metal articles will glitter
ii. By using lemon or tamarind juice: The green colour on copper vessel is due to formation of copper carbonate on it. Copper carbonate reacts with acids present in lemon or tamarind and as a result, this copper carbonate layer gets removed and the copper article glitters.
iii. Using reagents such as silver nitrate solution: When copper coin is dipped in silver nitrate solution, the glittering white deposit of silver metal is fonned on copper coin. Hence, glitter appears after some time.

Write the steps involved in the extraction of pure metals in the middle of the activity series from their carbonate ores.

Name a metal of medium reactivity and write three main steps in the extraction of this metal from its sulphide ore.

(i) Why do transition metals form a large number of alloys? (ii) Write the steps with chemical reactions involved in the preparation of K_2Cr_2O_7 from chromite ore.

Three students, Manish, Ramesh and Rajini were determining the extra elements present in an organic compound given by their teacher. They prepared the Lassaigne's extract (L.E.) independently by the fusion of the compound with sodium metal. Then they added solide FeSO_(4) and dilute sulphuric acid to a part of Lassaigne's extract. Manish and Rajni obtained prussian blue colour but Ramesh got red colour. Ramesh repeated the test with the same Lassaigne's extract, but again got red colour only. They were surprised and went to their teacher and told him about their observation. Teacher asked them to think over the reason for this. Can you help them by giving the reason for this observation. Also, write the chemical equations to explain the formation of compounds of different colour.
