Find the distance between the following ...

Find the distance between the following pairs of points `:(1) (2, 3), (4,1) (ii) (-5,7),(-1,3) (iii) (a,b), (–a, -b)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Suppose the coordinate of point P are `(x_(1),y_(1))` and of point Q are `(x_(2),y_(2))`.
`:.x_(1)=-5,y_(1)=7,x_(2)=-1` and `y_(2)=3`
By distance formula.
`PQ=sqrt((x_(2)-x_(1)^(2)+(y_(2)-y_(1))^(2))`
`=sqrt([-1-(-5)]^(2)+(3-7)^(2))`
`=sqrt((-1+5)^(2)+(-4)^(2))`
`=sqrt(16+16)`
`=sqrt(32)`
`=sqrt(16xx2)`
`=4sqrt(2)`
Distance between point p and Q is `4 sqrt(2)`.
