Acidified potassium permanganate (KMnO(...

Acidified potassium permanganate `(KMnO_(4))` is a chemical oxidant and explain how acidified potassium permanganate oxidise ferrous sulphate `(FeSO_(4))` . Accordingly write a new definition of oxidation and reduction.

Acidified `KMnO_(4)` oxidises ferrous sulphate `(Fe.SO_(4))` to ferric sulphate `Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)` and in addition to above `K_(2)SO_(4) and MnSO_(4)` by -products are formed
`2KMnO_(4)+10FeSO_(4)+8H_(2)SO_(4)+2MnSO_(4)+5Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)+8H_(2)O`
`2FeSO_(4)rarrFe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)`
Ionic reaction :
`2Fe^(2+)+2SO_(4)^(2-)rarr2Fe^(3+)+3SO_(4)^(2-)`
`"Net Ionic equation " Fe^(2+)rarrFe^(3+)+e^(-)`
When ferric ion is formed from ferrous ion the positive change is increased by one unit . While this happens the ferrous ion loses one electron.
When metal or its ion loses electron, it is called an oxidation and gain electron is called reductio.
`underset("Ferrous")(Fe^(2+))rarrunderset("Ferric")(Fe^(3))+e^(-)"Oxidation"`
`Fe^(3+)+e^(-)rarrFe^(2+)"Reduction"`
