A simple microscope consists of a convex lens of short focal length , usually fixed in a suitable frame with a handle or mounted on a stand.

The object is placed in front of the convex lens of short length such that the object distance is less than the focal length. The image is virtual and larger than the object . It is formed on the same side of the lens as the object.
A maximum magnification of about 20 can be obtained by a simple microscope .
A simple microscope is used by watch repairers to observe small parts of a watch and by jewellers to examine ornaments . A simple microscope (also called a magnifying glass) is also used to read words in small print.
