Where will a body weigh more, `2 km` above the surface of earth or `2 km` below the surface of earth ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At height `h (= 2 km)` above the surface of earth.
`g_(h) = g (1 - (2h)/(R )) = g (1 - (2 xx 2)/(R )) = g(1 - (4)/(R ))`
and below the surface of earth at depth
`d ( = 2 km)`
`g_(d) = g (1 - (d)/(R )) = g(1 - (2)/(R ))`
From above, it is clear that
`g_(d) gt g_(h)` or `mg_(d) gt mg_(h)`
Hence body well weigh more at a depth `2 km` below the surface of earth than `2 km` above the surface of earth.
