How will the value of g be effected if ...

How will the value of `g` be effected if
(i) the rotatio of the Earth about its polar axis stops and
(ii) the rotational speed of the Earth about its polar axis is doubled?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) If the rotation of Earth about its polar axis stops, then the centrifugal force acting on all bodies lying on the surface of Earth will disapear. Due to it, the value of acceleration due to gravity increase maximum at the equator and no change on the poles. since no centrifugal force is acting on the bodies at poles.
(ii) The value of acceleration due to gravity at a latitude `lambda` due to rotation of Earth is
`g' = g - R omega^(2) cos^(2) lambda`
When `omega = 2 omega`, then
`g'' = g - (2 omega)^(2) cos^(2) lambda = g - 4 omega^(2) cos^(2) lambda`
It means the value of `g` decreses maximum at equator and not effected at poles.
