The value of escape speed on the surface of Moon is small (only `2.5 km s^(-1))`. It is so because the value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon is small. The molecules of the atmospheric gases on the surface of the Moon have thermal speeds greater than the escape spped. due to it, all the molecules of gases have escape and there is no atmosphere.
