In case of a planet, two forces are acting inwards another is acting outward. The shape of the planet is determined by the balance between outward and inward forces and to have minimum surface energy by the planet. For a given volume, surface energy is minimum if surface area is minimum. If is so for a sphere. That is why, the planet is of spherical shape in the absence of net exernal force.
