In a two stage launch of a satllite, the first stage bringe the satlilte to a height of `500 km` and the second stage given it the necessary critical speed to put it in circular orbit around the Earth. Which stage requires more expenditude of fuel?
(Neglect damping due to air resistance, especially in the first stage).
Mass of the Earth `= 6.0 xx 10^(24) kg`,radius of Earth `= 6400 km, G = 6.67 xx 10^(-11) Nm^(2) kg^(-2)`.

Work done in first stage, `W_(1) =` difference in potential energies at the height `h (= 150 km)` and at the surface of earth
`W_(1) = - GM m[(1)/(R + h) - (1)/(R )]`
`= GM m [(1)/(R ) - (1)/(R + h)] = (GM m xx h)/(R (R + h))`
Work done in second stage,
`W_(2) = (1)/(2) m upsilon_(0)^(2)`, where `upsilon_(0) = sqrt((GM)/(R + h))`
`= (1)/(2) m (GM)/((R + h)) = (1)/(2) (GM m)/((R + h))`
`(W_(1))/(W_(2)) = (2h)/(R ) = (2 xx 150)/(6400) = (3)/(64) lt 1` or `W_(1) lt W_(2)`

In a two stage launch of a satellite, the first stage brings the satellite to a height of 150 km and the 2^(nd) stage gives it the necessary critical speed to put it in a circular orbit. Which stage requires more expenditure of fuel? Given mass of earth =6.0xx10^(24)kg radius of earth =6400 km .

A body is projected vertically upwards from the surface of the Earth so as to reach a height equal to the radius of the Earth. Neglecting resistance due to it, calculate the initial speed which should be imparted to the body. Mass of Earth = 5.98 xx 10^(24) kg , Radius of Earth = 6400 km , G = 6.67 xx 10^(-11) Nm^(2) kg^(-2) .
