Explain why a small ireon needle sinks in water while a large iron ship floats?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A body will float in a liquid if the weight of the liquid displaced by the immersed part of the body in liquid is equal to weight of body. In case of iron needle , the weight of water displaced by needle is much less than the weight of needle, hence, the iron needle sinks into the water. In case of a large iron ship, the weight of water displaced by the ship is higher than the weight of ship, hence the ship floats in water.
