While sewing, a person often wets the end of a thread before, trying to put it through the eys of the needle. Why?

When a person wets the end of a thread a thin film of water is formed over the fibres of the thread cling toghther. As a result of it, the area of cross-section of the thread decreases, consequently it becomes easirer to put the thread through the eye of the needle.
