It is done so that the thrust due to weight of train is spread over a large area of ground. As a result of it, the pressure on ground would reduce and hence would prevent the yielding of ground.

Assertion : Railways tracks are laid on small sized wooden sleepers. Reason : Small sized wooden sleepers are used so that rails exert more pressure on the railway track. Due to which rail does not leave the track

These questions consist two statements each, printed as Assertion and reason, while answering these question you are required to choose any one of the following four responsis: (a) If both the assertion and reason are true and reason is a true explanation of the assertion. (b) If both the assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of assertion. (c ) If the assertion is true but reason is false. (d) If both the assertion and reason are false. Q. Assertion: Railway tracks are laid on small-sized wooden sleepers. Reason: Small sized wooden sleepers are used so that rails exert more pressure on the railway track. due to which rail does not leave the track.

A railway track (made of iron) is laid in winter when the average temperature is 18^(@)C . The track consists of sections of 12.2 m placed one after the other. How much gap should be left between two such sections so that there in no compression during summer when the maximum temperature goes to 48^(@)C ? Coefficient of linear expansion of iron = 11 xx 10^(-5) @C(-1) .

Read the following and answer any four questions When a silvery grey powder of a solid (A) is mixed with a powder of solid (B) no reaction occurs. But if the mixture is ignited and lighted using magnesium ribbon a reaction occurs with evolution of large amount of heat forming product (C) which settles down as liquid metal and the solid product (D) formed floats on the liquid (C). (C) in solid form reacts with moisture to form rust. The amount of heat generated during the reaction is so high that the reaction is used in welding of electric conductors, joints in railway tracks. Based on this information, answer any four questions Which of the following is amphoteric in nature ?
