If a capillary tube is put in water in a weightlessness state, how will the rise of water in a capillary tube will be observed as compared to one under normal condition?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In normal conditions, the water rises in the capillary tube due to surface tension upto a height, where the upward force of surface tension becomes equal to the weight of water column raised in the tube. In the case of weightlessness, the effective weight of the water column raised becomes zero. Hence the water will rise upto the other end of the capollary tube, howsoever long the capillary is . The water meniscus will adjust its curvature at the upper end of capillary tube so that there is no over flowing.
