A parachute is advised to be used by a person, while jumping out of an aeroplane. Explain why?

A parachute when opens has a large structure. So a person with parachute experience a large viscous force. As a result of it, he descends through air with a very small velocity and touched surface of earth with a quite small velocity. Due to it, he does not get hurt.
