Why a clinical thermometer should not be sterilized by boiling water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Generally, the range of clinical thermometer is from `95^(@)F` to `110^(@)F` and the boling point of water is `212^(@)F` . If a clinical thermoter is sterilised by boling water, the capiliary of thermometer will burst due to thermal expansion of mercury in the capillary tube of thermomter.
