A vertical off-shore structure is built ...

A vertical off-shore structure is built to withstand a a maximum stress of `10^(9)Pa`. Is the structure suitabel for putting upon top of an oil well in bombay high? Take the depth of the sea to be roughly 3 km, and ignore oceam currents.

Here, maximum stress = `10^(9)Pa,h=3km = 3xx10^(3)m, rho (water)=10^(3) kg//m^(3)and g - 9.8 m//s^(2)`
The sturcture will be suitabel for putting upon top of an oil well provided the pressure exerted by sea water is less than the maximum stress is can bear.
Pressure due to sea water, `P = h rho g = 3xx10^(3)xx10^(3)xx9.8 = 2.94xx10^(7)Pa`
Since the pressure of sea water is less than the maximum stress of `10^(9)Pa`. the suructure will be suitabe for putting upon top of the oil well.
