Air gets thinner as we go up in the atmosphere. Will the velocity of sound change?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As we move up, the pressure (P) of air and density of air `(rho)` , both decrease,. As `v=sqrt((gammaRT)/(M))` , therefore, velocity of sound will not change so long as temperture T of air remains constant.
