A sitar wire and a tabla, when sounded together, produce 5 beats per second. What does it indicate ? If the tabla membrane is tightened, will the beat rate increase or decrease ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If `v_(1)` is frequency of sitar wire and `v_(92)` is frequency of tabla, then
diff. in frequencies `: (v_(1)-v_(2))=5`
or `: (v_(2)-v_(1))=5`
When the tabla membrane is tightened, tension is increased. The frequency `v_(2)` of the tabla increases. If `v_(1)gtv_(2)` , the beat frequency will decrease. If `v_(1)ltv_(2)`, the beat frequency will increase.
