A steel wire has a length os 12.0m and a mass of 2.10 kg. What should be the tension in the wire at `20^(@)C` so that speed of transverse wave on the wire equals the speed of transverse wave on the wire equals the speed of sound in dry air at this temperature which is `330ms^(-1)` ?

Text Solution

Here, `m=(2.10)/(12.0)kg//m=0.175kg//m, T=?`
`v_(20)=v_(0)sqrt((273+20)/(273))`
`=330xxsqrt((293)/(273))=341.9m//s`
As, `v_(20)=sqrt(T//m)`
`:. T=v_(20)^(2)xxm=(341.9)^(2)xx0.175N`
` =2.045xx10^(4)N`
