A linear harmonic oscillator of force co...

A linear harmonic oscillator of force constant `2 xx 10^6 N//m` and amplitude (0.01 m) has a total mechanical energy of (160 J). Its.

A

maximum potential energy is `100J`

B

maximum `K.E.` is `100J`

C

maximum `P.E.` is `160J`

D

maximum `P.E.` is zero

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B, C

Here, `k=2xx10^(6)N//m,r=0.01m`
In SHM., total energy `=` Max. K.E.`=` Max. P.E.
Here, max. K.E. `=(1)/(2)kR^(2)=(1)/(2)xx2xx10^(6)xx(0.01)^(2)=100J`
Since total mechanical energy is not `100J`, hence P.E. at equilibrium position cannot be zerio. In fact, P.E. at equilibrium position`=160-100=60J`
`:.` Max. P.E. `=100+60=160J`
