Compare the electrostatic field given by...

Compare the electrostatic field given by Coulomb's law and magnetic field given by Biot Savart's law.

Text Solution

1. Both the fields obey inverse square law, hence both are of long range.
2. The electrostatic field is produced by an electric charge which is a scalar. The magnetic field is produced by a current element `Idvecl`, which is a vector.
3. The electrostatic field due to charge acts along or opposite to the line joining the source of charge and the field point, depending upon whether the field is due to positive charge or negative charge.
The magnetic field at a point due to current element `Idvecl` is perpendicular to the plane containing the displacement vector `vecr` and the current element `Idvecl`.
4. The electrostatic field is linearly related with the source of charge and magnetic field is linearly related with source of magnetic field i.e.,
`Idvecl`, hence both the field obey superposition principle.
5. The electrostatic field at a point due to a point charge is angle independent whereas the magnetic field at a point due to current element depends on the angle between `Idvecl` and `vecr`.
6. Electrostatic field at a point due to source charge decreases when a medium is inserted between the source charge and the given
`Eprop(1)/(in_0in_r)`
The magnetic field at a point due to current element increases when a medium is inserted between the current element and the given point, as `Bpropmu_0mu_r`.
