Does the length of an iron bar change when it is magnetized?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Yes, on magnetisation, the molecular magnets are aligned parallel to the field. Therefore, the length of the bar in the direction of magnetisation increases. This effect is called magnetostriction effect. This effect is used for producing ultrasonic waves.
