A small coil carrying current is held in a uniform magnetic field. How does the coil tend to orient itself relative to magnetic field?

Text Solution

When a current carrying coil is held in a uniform magnetic field, the coil experiences a torque due to magnetic field given by
`tau=MB sin alpha=ni AB sin alpha`.
The system will be in stable equilibrium if torque is zero, which is so if `alpha=0^@`. This is possible if magnetic field `vecB` is perpendicular to the plane of the coil.
