The diameter of sun is several hundred times bugger than the moon, still at the time of solar eclips, the entire sun is covered by the moon. How ?

Text Solution

This is because distance of the sum from earth is `1000` times greater than the distance of the moon from earth. At the time of solar eclipse, moon comes between sun and earth. The angles subtended by the sun and the moon at the eye are nearly equal.

The approximate diameter of the sun is times the diameter of Earth.

The change in the value of acceleration of earth toward sun, when the moon coomes from the position of solar eclipse to the position on the other side of earth in line with sun is : (mass of moon =7.36xx10^(22) kg, orbital radius of moon =3.8xx10^(8) m.)

Given that the mass of the earth is 81.5 times the mass of the moon and the diameter of the moon is 0.27 times that of the earth . Calculate the value of acceleration due to gravity at the surface of the moon . Given 'g' on the earth = 9.8 ms^(-2)

Answer the following : If you compare the graviational force on the Earth due to the sun to that due to the moon you would find that the Sun's pull is greater than the Moon's pull. However, the tidal effect to the Moon's pull is greater than the tidal effect of the Sun. Why ?
