Distance of closest approach is the distance between the centre of nucleus and the point form which the alpha particle appraoching directely to the nucleus returns. Impact parameter is the perpendicular distance of the velocity vector of the alpha particle form the central line of the nuclues, when the particle is far away form the atom.
