The binding energies per nucleon for deu...

The binding energies per nucleon for deuteron (`._1H^2`) and helium (`._2He^4)` are `1.1 MeV` and `7.0 MeV` respectively. The energy released when two deutrons fuse to form a helium nucleus (`._2He^4`) is……..

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`23.6MeV`

Two electrons have four nucleons in all, having total B.E`=4xx1.1=4.4MeV`. The helium nucleus has also four nucleons. As BE/nucleons in helium nucleus is 7.0MeV. Therefore, total B.E. of helium nucleus `4xx7=28MeV`. Energy released =increase in total binding energy
`=28-4.4=23.6MeV`
