The correct order of increasing boiling ...

The correct order of increasing boiling points is

A

n-butane lt 1-butanol lt n-butyl chloride lt isobutane

B

n-butane lt isobutane lt n-butyl chloride lt 1-butanol

C

isobutane lt n-butyl chloride lt n-butane lt 1-butanol

D

isobutane lt n-butane lt n-butyl chloride lt 1-butanol.

The correct Answer is:
D

Increase in branching decreases surface area of the molecule and therefore, results in lesser Van der Waal's forces . Consequently, isobutane has lesser boiling point than n-butane. Alkyl chlorides have higher boiling than corresponding alkanes because they are polar and stronger dipole-dipole force operate between the molecules of alkyl chloride. Alcohols have higher boiling point than corresponding alkyl chloride, because alcohols molecules are associated through strong H-bonds
