The natural polymer of 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene is, commonly known as natural rubber. When it is treated with sulphur between temperatures 373K to 415K, chains of the polymers become bonded with each other through -S-S- crosslinkings. This reaction is called vulcanisation of rubber. As a result of this reaction, natural rubber, which is otherwise soft and sticky, becomes hardened.
