Explain whether cationic or anlonic poiymerisation takes place in the preparation of acrylonitrile.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronegative -CN group present in acrylonitrile `(CH_2 =CH-CN)` is responsible fo r the increased stability of the carbanion. Since carbanion is formed as an intermediate in both chain initiation and chain propagation, acrylonitrile should be prepared by anionic polymerisation.
