Compounds like ice, NaCl etc., have a sharp melting point. However polymers do not have a sharp melting point. Give reasons.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Polymers are formed by the combination of molecules (monomers) of different molecular weights. When polymers melt, the smaller molecules with low melting point melt first followed by the heavier molecules. Thus, the entire polymer does not melt at a fixed temperature, rather it melts in a temperature range. Hence, polymers do not have a sharp melting point.
