Why do silver articles turns blackish while copper vessels turn greenish on keeping it in air for a long time ?

Text Solution

(i) On exposure to air, Silver articles turn blackish after sometime because of the layer of silver sulphide `(Ag_(2)S)` formed by the reaction of silver with hydrogen slphide in the air.
(ii) Carbon dioxide in moist air react with the surface of copper vessel and these copper vessels turn greenish because of the formation of copper carbonate `(CuCO_(3))` on its surface.

Spring fitted doors close by themselves when released. You want to keep the door open for a long time, say for an hour. If you put a half kg stone in front of the open door, it does not help. The sotne slides with the door and the door gets closed. However, if you sandwitch a 20 g of wood in the small gap between the door and the floor, the door stays open. Explain why a much lighter peice of wood is able to keep the door open while the heavy fails.

An air-cored solenoid with length 30 cm, area of cross-section 25cm^(2) and number of turns 500, carries a current of 2.5 A. The current is suddenly switched off in a brief time of 10^(-3)s . How much is the average back emf induced across the ends of the open switch in the circuit? Ignore the variation in magnetic field near the ends of the solenoid.

Find the magnetic intensity H at the centre of a long solenoid having n turns per unit length and carrying a current i (a) when no material is kept in it and (b) when a long copper rod is inserted in the solenoid.
