Assertion: Electron gain enthalpy value ...

Assertion: Electron gain enthalpy value of the 3rd peirod p-block elements of the mordern periodic table are generally more negative than the 2nd period element of the same group.
Reason: Due to smaller atomic size of the 2nd peirod element, its electron density is high which eases the addition of electron.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion

B

If the assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

C

If assertion is true but reason is false.

D

If assertion is false but reason is true.

The correct Answer is:
C

Assertion: it is correct statement and this can be understood by taking the following example.
Negative electron gain enthalpy of `O` and `F` is less than `S` or `Ci` respectively.
Reason: It is incorrect statement: This is due to the fact that when an electron is added to `O` or `F` , the added electron goes to the smaller `n=2` energy level and experiences significant repulsion fromthe other electrons present in this level. In `S` or `Cl`, the electron goes to the larger `n=3` energy level and consequently occupies a larger region of space leading to much less electron-electron repulison.

What is periodicity in properties of elements with reference to the Modern Periodic Table ? Why do all the elements of the same group have similar properties? How does the tendency of elements to gain electrons change as we move from left to right in a period ? State the reason of this change.

Assertion: Electron gain enthalpy always becomes less negative as we go down a group in Modern periodic table. Reason: The size of the atom increase on going down the group in Modern periodic table and the added electron would be farther from the nucleus.

The general electronic configuration of an element belonging to the p-block of the periodic table will be represented by

Assertion: The electron gain enthalpy of N is +ve while that of P is -ve. Reason: Smaller atomic size of N is which there is a considerable electron-electron repulsion and hence the additional electron is not accepted easily.

The group in the modern periode table, in which all the elements do not have same number of electrons in their valence shell is :

Assertion : 2^(nd) period elements do not involve in excitation of electron. Reason : 2^(nd) period elements do not have vacant 2d-orbitals.
