Smog is due to unburnt hydrocarbons which are oxidized to `RCHO` and `RCOR` which in turn combines with `NO_(2)` forming `PAN` (peroxyancetyrate, `RCO_(3)NO_(2))`. If catalytic converters are used in automobiles, and ratio of air and Fuel is in a ratio to release `CO` and unburnt hyforcarbons in small amount , then smog formation is controlled.
