A small sphere of mass `1g` carries a charge of `+ 6 muC`. The sphere is suspended by a string in an electric field of `400 NC^(-1)` acting downwards. Calculate tension in the string. What will be the tension if charge on the sphere were `-6 muC ?`

Here , `m = 1 g = 10^(-3) kg,`
`q = +6 muC = + 6xx10^(-6) C`
`E = 400 NC^(-1)`, downwards.
As is clear form fig.

`T = F_(e) + mg = qE + mg`
`= 6xx10^(-6)xx400+10^(-3)xx9.8`
`= 122xx10^(-4)N = 1.22xx10^(-2)N`
However,, when `q = -6 muC` force due to electric field is upwards.
`T + F_(e) = mg`
or `T = mg - F_(e) = 9.8xx10^(-3) -24xx10^(-4)`
`= 74xx10^(-4) N`
