Two identical parallel plate capacitors ...

Two identical parallel plate capacitors are connected in parallel to a3 volt battery. The battery is disconnected and the two capacitors are joined in series, Fig. What is the potentail difference between `A` and `B` ?

A

6 volt

B

2 volt

C

3 volt

D

12 volt

The correct Answer is:
D

Here, in Fig ,
`C_(p) = C_(1) + C_(2) = C + C = 2C`
`:. q_(1) = q_(2) = C_(p) V = 2 CV`
When combined in series, `C_(s) = (C )/(2)`
`:. V = (q)/(C_(s)) = (2CV)/(C//2) = 4V = 4xx3 = 12` volt
