Why do we prefer potentiometer with a longer bridge wire?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The longer is the length of a potentiometer wire, the more accurate is the measurement with it. It results in smaller value of fall of potential per unit length of wire, i.e., smaller value of potential gradient. For example, if a 2 volt battery is connected across a potentiometer of 100 cm length, then its each centrimeter measures `2//100` volt. If the length is 1000 cm, then its each centimeter `2//1000` or 1/500 volt for which the accuracy will be more.

Assertion: We prefer a potentiometer with a longer bridge wire. Reason : By doing this, the sensitivity of the bridge is increased because for longer wire potential drop per unit length will be small.
