A heating coil is rated `100 W , 200 V`. The coil is cut in half and two pieces are joined in parallel to the same source . Now what is the energy `( "in" xx 10^(2) J)` liberated per second?

Here, P = 1000 W , V = 200 V
Resistance of heater coil,
`R = V^(2)/P = (200 xx 200)/1000 = 40 Omega`
Resistance of either part `= 20 Omega`
Equivalent resistance when both parts are connected in parallel, `R' = ( 20 xx 20)/( 20 + 20) = 10 Omega`
Eneregy liberated per second in the new combination when connected to a source o f 200 V
` = V^(2)/(R') = ( 200 xx 200)/10 = 4000 Js^(-1)`
