For the electrochemical cell, `(M|M^(o+))||(X^(c-)|X)`, `E^(c-)._((M^(o+)|M))=0.44V`, and `E^(c-)._((X|X^(c-))=-0.33V`.
From this data, one can conclude that

A

`M + X rarr M^+ +X^-`is the spontaneous reaction

B

`M + X rarr M^+ +X^-` is the spontaneous reaction

C

`E_(cell)^@ =0.. 77 V`

D

` E_(cell)^@ =0.. 77 V`

The correct Answer is:
B

For the give cell `M|M^+ ||X^_|X, ` the cell reaction is derived as follows :
RHS : reduction `X+e^- rarr X^-` …(i)
LHS : Oxdation ` M rarr M^+ +e^-` …(ii)
Add (i) and (ii) `M+X rarr M^+ +X^-`
The cell potential `=- 0. 11 V`
Since `E_(cell) =- ve`, the cell reaction derived above is not spontaneous . In fact , the reverse reaction will occur spontaneously.
