At low temperature phenol reacts wity `Br_(2)` in `CS_(2)` to form

A

`m`-bromophenol

B

`p`-bromophenol

C

`o`-and `p`-bromophenol

D

`2,4,6-`tribromophenol

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

In presence of non-polar solvent `(CS_(2))` the ionization phenol is suppressed. The ring is slightly activated and hence mono substitution occurs.
On the other hand with `Br_(2)` and water, phenol forms `2,4,6`-tribromo phenol.

In aqueous solution phenol ionizes to give phenoxide ion. Due to the presence of negative charge on oxygen the benzene ring is highly activiated and hence trisubtituted product is obtained.
