In a nuclear reactor , moderators slow down the neutrons which come out in a fission process. The moderator used have light nuclei. Heavy nuclei will not serve the purpose because,

A

They will break up

B

elastic collision of neutrons with heavy nuclei will not slow them down

C

the net weight of the reactor woud be unbearably high

D

substances with heavy nuclei do not occur in liquid or gaseous state at room temperature .

Which allotrope of carbon is used as a moderator in the nuclear reactor?

In has been estimated that the total energy radiated by the sun is 3.8xx10^26 J per second. The source of energy of stars is a thermonuclear reaction called nuclear fusion. Fusion reactions are not controlled. It is presumed that the energy of stars is due to two processes called proton-proton cycle and carbon nitrogen cycle. Fusion cannot take place at ordinary temperature. This, hydrogen bomb uses a small fission bomb, which on explosion causes the temperature to rise very high about 10^7 K. We have yet to see how a hydrogen bomb can be used for peaceful life-sustaining purpose. Energy released in the process of fusion is due to mass defect. It is also called Q-value. Q =Deltamc^2 , Deltam= mass defect Answer the following questions based on above passage: Fusion reaction takes place at about:

Which allotrope of C is used as moderator in atomic reactors and as solid lubricant for heavy machinery?

An isotope of hydrogen reacts with oxygen to give compound (A), which is used as a moderator in nuclear reactor. Like hydrogen, this isotope also undergoes addition reaction. It reacts with ethylene to give compound B, which is a saturated hydrocarbon. Identify the element A and B. A is radioactive.

It is now believed that protons and neutrons ( which constitute nucleI of ordinary matter ) are themselves built out of more elementary units called quarks. A proton and a neutron consist of three quarks each. Two types of quarks, the so called 'up' quark ( denoted by 'u') and 'down' quark ( denoted by 'd') of charge (2)/(3) e and (-1)/(3) e respectively , together with electrons build up ordinary matter. Suggest a possible quark composition of a proton and a neutron.

Statement I:Some energy is released when a heavy nucleus disintegrate into two nuclei of moderate size. Statement II: The more the mass number of the nucleus , more is the binding energy for each proton or neutron

Fig. shows a potentiometer with a cell of 2.0V and internal resistance 0.40Omega maintaining a potential drop across the resistor wire AB. A standard cell which maintains a constant emf of 1.02V (for very moderate currents upto a few pA) gives a balance point at 67.3 cm length of the wire. Io ensure very low currents drawn from the standard cell, a very high resistance of 600kOmega is put in series with it which is shorted close to the balance point. The standard cell is then, replaced by a cell of unknown emf e and the balance point found similarly turns out to be at 82.3 cm length of the wire, What purpose does the high resistance of 600kOmega have?
