Write the basic nuclear process of neutr...

Write the basic nuclear process of neutron undergoing `beta`-decay . Why is the detection of neutrons found very difficult ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1st part : `underset"(neutron)"(._0^1n) oversetbeta to underset"(proton)"(._1^1p) + underset((beta-"particle i.e., electron "))(._(-1)^0e) + underset"(anti-neutrino)"(._0^0barv)`
2nd part : It is very difficult to detect neutrinos or anti-neutrinos experimentally , because they have neither any charge nor any mass.

Consider the fission of ._92^238U by fast neutrons. In one fission event , no neutrons are emitted and the final stable end products, after the beta decay of the primary fragments , are ._58^140Ce and ._44^99Ru . Calculate Q for this fission process. Given , m(._92^238U)=238.05079 u, m(._58^140 Ce) = 139.90543 u m(._44^99Ru) = 98.90594 u, m_n =1.008667 u

In a nuclear reactor , moderators slow down the neutrons which come out in a fission process. The moderator used have light nuclei. Heavy nuclei will not serve the purpose because,
