The compound that will not give iodoform on treatment with alkali and iodine is :

A

acetone

B

ethanol

C

diethyl ketone

D

isopropyl alcohol

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Iodoform test is given by compounds having
`-overset(O)overset(||)(C) - CH_(2)`or `-overset(OH)overset(|)(C)H-CH_(3)` group.
Acetone `(CH_(3)-underset(O)underset(||)(C)-CH_(3))` contains this group whereas ethanol is isopropyl alcohol get oxidised to acetaldehyde `(CH_(3)CHO)` and acetone `( CH_(3)-underset(O)underset(||)(C)-CH_(3))` respectively in presence of `I_(2)` and they therefore give iodoform test.Hence only diethyl ketone
`(C_(2)H_(5)-overset(O)overset(||)(C)-C_(2)H_(5))` does not give iodoform test.
