A beam of monochromatic light is refacted from vacuum into a medium of refracticve index `1.5` The wavelength of refracted light will be

A

depend on the intensity of refracted light

B

be the same as in vacuum

C

be longer than that in vacuum

D

be smaller than that in vacuum

The correct Answer is:
D

The velocity of light in vacuum and in the medium are c and `v_(m)` respectively .
Then ` , n = (c)/(v_(m)) = (v lambda_(v))/(v lambda_(m)) = (lambda_(v))/(lambda_(m))`
`therefore lambda_(v) = n lambda_(m) = 1.5 lambda_(m) ` or `lambda_(m) = (lambda_(v))/(1.5)`
Thus the wavelength of the refrated light is smaller than that in vacuum .
